Stars Night, Thursday August 10 at the Euro Space Center: an unmissable astronomy party!

On August 10, don’t miss your chance to take part in an unbelievable night inside the Euro Space Center during Stars Night. This major astronomic event is an enriching experience for the whole family.

Enjoy unique animations during this great astronomy party, such as theme-based workshops for kids and adults to learn more about the universe; stars and planet observations with many astronomy clubs; planetariums; and many other surprises to discover in family or with your friends.

We did not choose this date by accident. This is the perseids’ shooting stars peak which allow us to observe between 70 and 110 shooting stars per hour. In addition, the new Moon will happen a few days later, creating ideal conditions to observe stars, nebulae and galaxies in one of the best skies of the year!

This event starts at 4.30 PM and is free thanks to the generosity of the Euro Space Center and astronomy clubs which will share their knowledge with passion.

  • « Observer et comprendre les pluies d’étoiles filantes » par Coralie Byttebier (in French) La nuit des étoiles est un événement annuel organisé dans le cadre d’une des plus grosses pluies d’étoiles filantes annuelles. Dans ce contexte, nous allons découvrir ensemble l’histoire des pluies d’étoiles filantes, de leurs premières observations par nos ancêtres à ce qu’on en sait actuellement. Nous verrons également comment observer les étoiles filantes et participer à des campagnes participatives.
  • « Een rijs door het heelal met astrografie » door Dominique Dierick (in Dutch) Astrofotografie houdt zich bezig met het fotograferen van gebeurtenissen en objecten aan de hemel. In deze lezing leer je de basistechniek en het materiaal nodig voor astrofotografie kennen, op een reis die begint op onze aarde en eindigt in de verste uithoeken van het heelal: van mooie atmosferische fenomenen, over de maan, zon en planeten tot de geheimzinnige quasars waarvan het licht ons bereikte na een reis van miljarden jaren.
  • « Astronaute, du rêve à la réalité » par Pierre-Emmanuel Paulis et Yves Pleindoux (in French)
  • « Artemis : on y retourne et c'est pour y rester » par Christian Barbier (in French) Le début de la conquête spatiale fut ponctué de plusieurs évènements comme l'alunissage historique de Neil Armstrong en 1969, suivi par des réductions de missions lunaires et le développement de la navette spatiale américaine. L'accident de Challenger en 1986 entraîne des changements, puis la création de l'ISS. Le programme Constellation est annulé et remplacé par Artemis, qui prévoit des missions lunaires avec le véhicule Orion et le lanceur SLS. Des incertitudes persistent quant aux délais et aux éléments clés. L'ESA participera à Artemis, tandis que la Chine poursuit son propre programme. La conférence portera sur l'histoire, les programmes, les partenaires et les enjeux spatiaux.

• ACTIVITIES
  • What is a radio wave?Demonstrations. Today, we use radio waves everywhere: GDM, broadcasting, GPS, microwave oven… But did you know that our Sun, stars, pulsars… are also radio waves? From 12 years old.
  • Fairy tales (17h30 – 18h30 – 19h30 – 20h30) (in French) – Myths and constellations by Iota Gaganas – From 4 years old. Ce spectacle vous fait découvrir les mythes grecs qui sont à l'origine des noms des planètes et des satellites de notre système solaire. Il vous confie également les secrets des constellations de la “Lyre”, de “Castor et Pollux”, du “Cygne”… Embarquez pour un voyage dans le temps afin de découvrir, dans la voûte étoilée, les histoires incroyables d’”Orphée et Eurydice”, de “Déméter et Perséphone”, et de “Léda et Zeus”.
  • Observation area – for everyone. Observation of the Sun (if the weather allows it) and meteor echo with our MOMSTER antenna during the afternoon. Observation of the night sky from 10.30 PM. Meet astronomers, discover the material and take a look in the telescopes available on site. You will admire the beautiful ringed planet Saturn, the giant Jupiter and our neighbor, Mars.
  • Make-up – for everyone. Make-ups to thrill the little ones.

Presence of various astronomy clubs and associations – Meet real space and astronomy enthusiasts and improve your knowledge from 5.30 PM in the Temple of the Planets : Société astronomique de Liège, AstroNamur, Groupe Astronomie de Spa, BW Astronomie, Astrovéga, FFAAB, ASCEN, Cercle Astronomique Mosant.
